Snack and drink vending machines are a staple of all kinds of establishments throughout the world, and they are not going anywhere anytime soon. They are however, receiving a change for the better. According to a Chicago Tribune report, new vending machine regulations are leading to healthier vending choices becoming available throughout the city.
A recent ordinance approved by the City Council will place new rules on snacks and beverages on 350 machines throughout 94 city buildings. These new regulations set certain requirements on fat, calories, sugar, and sodium, which leads to granola bars and low-fat milk taking the place of chocolates and sodas.
“It’s not appropriate to be selling a harmful product on city property,” said Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
Just as vending machines have adapted to be compatible with our credit cards, smartphones, and everything in between, it is comforting to see them adjust to encourage a healthy lifestyle. This is especially important for the Chicago schools and parks that will adapt these regulations, as they are filled with young snackers whose eating habits can quickly be shaped by the machines around them.
